I got this helmet for my almost 4yr old as he really wanted "skateboarding" helmet and most helmets of this kind out there cost much more than he needs at this point. His head is bigger than average for his age (20.5") and the small size fit a little bit loose (I would say it fits 21" perfectly). I fixed it by sticking the extra pad supplied with the helmet on top of the front insert padding. Now it fits snug and this way it will fit him longer. The packaging says that small is for age 12 and younger and the large is 13 and over.
